MANILA, Philippines – No one is more disappointed than Paul Lee at the awful timing of his knee injury, which forced him to skip the Philippine national team's three-day training camp before the start of the PBA Commissioner's Cup.
It wasn't the first time Lee had been forced to miss a Gilas Pilipinas camp. He also had to back out of the national team pool ahead of the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, again due to the recurring injury in his left knee.
The 2012 Rookie of the Year suited up for the Hotshots in their first game of the PBA Commissioner's Cup on Wednesday, but he was clearly not in peak form. Lee managed only two points, seven rebounds, and three assists in 28 minutes, while shooting 1-of-9 from the field.
"Kailangan ko lang din makuha 'yung timing ko," Lee said after the game. "Kailangan din makuha 'yung flow sa import namin."...
MANILA — The Philippine Basketball Association's (PBA) board of governors has agreed to release 15 Gilas players 15 days ahead of the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) men’s championship.
According to a report on Spin.ph, the decision was made Wednesday following a special board meeting held at the league office in Libis, Quezon City.
The Seaba tournament, slated on May 12-18 at Araneta Coliseum, serves as a qualifier to the FIBA Asia Cup....
The Hotshots (1-0) got a balanced effort from its starters and its bench while continuing its mastery over the Fuel Masters (1-1), whom Star beat in the quarterfinals of the recent Philippine Cup.
Toney Mitchell had a productive debut for Star with 24 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and a steal, while getting able backing from Marc Barroca and Allein Maliksi....
The search for the right import will continue even after the PBA Commissioner’s Cup begins on Friday. The PBA will allow import changes at any time, even for the last game of the Finals. It’s not easy landing an import who fits a team’s style or system. A PBA coach said talent isn’t the problem but the ability to play how and what he’s supposed to.
That’s why six teams are bringing back imports for the second conference. They’ve been scouted and tested. Their return is an indication that they’ve passed the test. The comebacking imports are Mahindra’s James White, TNT KaTropa’s Denzel Bowles (previously played in four seasons with the Purefoods franchise), NLEX’s Wayne Chism (previously played in three seasons for Rain Or Shine, now reunited with coach Yeng Guiao), Rain Or Shine’s Shawn Taggart (played for GlobalPort last season), Barangay Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee (played for Ginebra in the Governors Cup last season) and Phoenix’ Eugene Phelps (played for the Fuel Masters in the Governors Cup last season).
Phoenix coach Ariel Vanguardia settled for the under-sized Phelps, who’s 6-4 15/16, after failing to land 6-10 Jarrid Famous, 6-9 Brandon Costner and 6-9 Ekene Ibekwe. Even former Alaska import Diamon Simpson was on Vanguardia’s wish list but he’s under contract in Israel. Famous’ rights are held by GlobalPort until after this conference. GlobalPort will keep Famous’ rights and call him up in case original pick Sean Williams doesn’t work out. Blackwater also tried to pry Famous out of GlobalPort....
MANILA, Philippines - PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa said the other day the pro league will re-allow the use of the arm-bar in defending an offensive player with his back to the basket anywhere from below the extended free throw line in the coming Commissioner’s Cup where the import height limit is 6-10.
Narvasa said the arm-bar was nearly reinstated for the second conference last season but the plan was scuttled. “We consult the coaches whenever we intend to adjust the rules,” he said. “Last year, we couldn’t be sure about the consistency of letting go the contact with the arm-bar or not so we decided to postpone bringing it back. Now that our referees are more comfortable in working within our officiating philosophy, we think the timing is right to re-allow the arm-bar particularly as we’ve got big imports playing in the Commissioner’s Cup.”
Narvasa explained that no foul will be called on the defensive player using the arm-bar on the offensive player’s back for as long as the elbow isn’t extended beyond a 90 degree angle and no weight is put on the arm. At the moment, the arm-bar will be allowed only if the offensive player has ball possession. Once the offensive player faces the basket, no arm-bar will be allowed....
