MANILA, Philippines – Chito Victolero's first conference as head coach of the Star Hotshots opened on the wrong foot, with back-to-back losses to San Miguel and GlobalPort. But it ended with the young mentor earning praises from one of the PBA's greatest coaches.
"Coach Chito made the right adjustments," said Tim Cone, the winningest coach in PBA history, after Game 7 of their PBA Philippine Cup Finals series last Tuesday night. "He really gave us a lot of problems."
Victolero, tapped to replace Jason Webb – the man who replaced Cone as coach of the Purefoods franchise – righted the ship midway through the conference, giving the Hotshots free reign on offense while compelling them to play defense at a superb level.
He guided the Hotshots to an eight-game winning streak, from the last four games of the eliminations, to two quarterfinal games against Phoenix, and to their first two semifinal games against Ginebra in the PBA Philippine Cup....
MANILA, Philippines – Tim Cone's delight at leading Barangay Ginebra to a second consecutive Finals appearance last Tuesday evening was somewhat tempered as it came at the expense of his former team, the Star Hotshots.
Cone's Gin Kings routed the Hotshots, 89-76, in Game 7 of what had been an emotional "Manila Clasico" semifinals series in the PBA Philippine Cup. They lost the first two games of the best-of-seven affair, faced elimination in Game 6, but forced a knockout duel and triumphed in that as well.
Ginebra has now made it to the Finals of back-to-back conferences, and they will take on San Miguel Beer in the All-Filipino Cup Finals. Before shifting his focus to the Beermen, however, Cone spared a thought for his former players in Star....
Victolero and the Hotshots came up short against Barangay Ginebra in the semifinals, falling in seven games after taking a 3-2 lead in the series.
The Gin Kings will face two-time defending champion San Miguel Beer in the finals, with Game 1 set for Friday at Mall of Asia Arena....
Star dropped an 89-76 decision to Ginebra, but Pingris kept his head high.
“I’m proud, really proud of the team and really proud of my teammates,” Pingris said in Filipino. “I also want to thank coach (Chito Victolero) for doing his best.”...
MANILA, Philippines — The Star Hotshots' campaign in the PBA Philippine Cup may have ended in disappointing fashion, but their coach is optimistic they can turn the heartbreak into something positive as the season progresses.
Star was one game away from making the All-Filipino finals, but squandered an 11-point lead against the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings in Game 6. In the do-or-die Game 7, the Hotshots fell behind early, recovered and came to within three points, but ultimately, could not get over the hump.
The Gin Kings came away with an 89-76 win in the seventh game of the Manila Clasico, and the Hotshots were left to lick their wounds, as they missed the finals for the seventh consecutive conference since winning a Grand Slam in the 2014 season....
