PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Word spread quickly at Pebble Beach on Tuesday, prompting pats on the back and good-natured barbs. Daniel Chopra even had Tiger Woods wondering when the free drinks were forthcoming -- protocol when a player makes a hole-in-one.

But Chopra went one better. He aced two holes during the same practice round on Monday at the storied Pebble Beach Golf Links, a feat that is quite remarkable -- even for someone who has now made 15.

The first was at the iconic par-3 seventh, a short hole down to the water that measured 103 yards. Chopra used a 50-degree wedge....

Former welterweight titleholders Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto should have been at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this week going through the final preparations for their much-anticipated rematch on Saturday night in the main event of Showtime's first major boxing card of the year.

Instead, Berto is rehabilitating the left biceps he injured in training on Jan. 30, which forced the card to be postponed. But the sides are working to reschedule the fight.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, Ortiz's promoter, told ESPN.com on Tuesday that the fight will likely move to June 30. The fight, Schaefer added, also would move up the Las Vegas Strip to Mandalay Bay, which is a sister property of the MGM Grand....

Junior middleweight prospect Demetrius Andrade, the former amateur world champion and 2008 U.S. Olympian, will have to adjust to a new opponent on four days' notice.

Andrade was supposed to face Derek "Pooh" Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs) in the scheduled 10-round main event of this week's "Friday Night Fights" card (ESPN2/ESPN.com, 9 ET) at the Mohegan Sun resort in Uncasville, Conn. However, Star Boxing informed ESPN on Tuesday that Ennis had withdrawn due to a 103-degree fever.

Matchmaker Ron Katz of Star Boxing, which co-promotes Andrade with Banner Promotions, worked quickly and replaced Ennis later Tuesday with Terrance Cauthen, a 1996 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist....

LONDON  - A US company has won the contract to print millions of tickets for the London Olympics, angering some local politicians who say the deal should have gone to a British business.

Weldon, Williams & Lick Inc, a specialist printing firm based in the historic Wild West frontier town of Fort Smith, Arkansas, will produce and package the tickets before they are flown across the Atlantic for distribution.

The London Organising Committee (LOCOG) defended its choice after London-based politicians attacked the decision as bad for British business and for the environment....

Texters rarin' to defend crown

February 08, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - Talk N Text looks forward to defending the PBA Commissioner’s Cup title, barely two weeks since successfully retaining the Philippine Cup championship.

Big men Ali Peek and Harvey Carey said despite the short break the team had since finishing off surprise package Powerade in five games during the All-Filipino Finals, the entire Tropang Texters are again getting ready to stake their title in the import-laden conference that reels off this Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“We’re up to the challenge, hopefully we can win more championships,” said Peek, who appeared with Carey for the very first time in yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Ave.

“Winning has always been our ultimate goal,” added Carey, who, together with reigning PBA MVP Jimmy Alapag, is the only holdovers from the original Talk `N Text team that won its breakthrough title in the league in 2003....

Vargas questions Lassiter trade

February 08, 2012

Lassiter to Petron Blaze?MANILA, Philippines—The player transfer form request that would send sensational Powerade rookie Marcio Lassiter to Petron Blaze was finally received by the PBA Tuesday, prompting one prominent board member to comment that “it doesn’t make sense.”

Ricky Vargas, the PLDT franchise’s representative to the board, yesterday called on the Coca-Cola management to declare its intentions since “it doesn’t make sense for Coke to be trading away its good players if they are staying (in the PBA).”

At past lunch yesterday, a transfer form signed by Powerade’s JB Baylon and Hector Calma of Petron formally asked for the league’s approval of the trade that would send Lassiter to the Boosters in exchange for Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra, a deal that has been brewing since last week....

Meralco is weighing its options with Jelani McCoy nursing a strained calf muscle.

Meanwhile, San Miguel Corp. has reportedly tapped former Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman as coaching consultant....

Lassiter for Baclao, Guevarra trade offer sent to league office

February 08, 2012

The PBA's Twitter account (@pbaconnect) confirmed that the commissioner's office has received the papers for a proposed trade that has the Powerade Tigers shipping Marcio Lassiter to the Petron Blaze Boosters for Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.

Rumors of a deal between the two sides have existed since last week online, but the two teams only sent the appropriate paperwork to the PBA today.

Lassiter, a Filipino-American graduate of Cal State Fullerton, played for the Philippine national team prior to entering last year's PBA draft, where he was picked fourth....

Peek thought of retirement after being shot

February 08, 2012

Talk 'N Text's man mountain Ali Peek almost walked away from the game he love most when his life was hanging by a thread three months ago.

"I thought of retiring after I was shot," the 6-foot-4 power forward admitted for the first time since that fateful night November 7, 2011, when he was shot in the nape by a lone gunman at the parking area of the RFM gym.

The gunman was never caught and the bullet meant to kill him remained lodged at the back of his skull since removing it requires a very sensitive procedure....
