Solomon Mercado. AKTV/Paul Ryan TanThe GlobalPort Batang Pier are hellbent on making a splash in the Commissioner’s Cup.

After sealing a deal to acquire Japeth Aguilar from Talk ‘N Text, GlobalPort has also agreed to terms that would land them Meralco star Sol Mercado, who led the PBA in scoring and assists in the Philippine Cup, according to coach Junel Baculi.

In the deal, which is up for PBA approval, GlobalPort would acquire Mercado and rookies Kelly Nabong and JP Belencion from Meralco in exchange for Rey Guevarra, rookie Vic Manuel, swingman Josh Vanlandingham, and a 2015 first-round pick.

The deal would reunite Mercado with GlobalPort owner Mikee Romero, for whose Harbour Centre squad the spitfire guard played in the Philippine Basketball League.

“Boss Mikee also wants Sol because he played for Harbour Centre before,” said GlobalPort coach Junel Baculi. “We also realized that with the kind of import we have, we really need to tinker our line up.”
