Azkals help Global deal Stallion first UFL loss
Global FC used a workmanlike performance to slow down the vaunted Stallion Giligan’s attack and carve out a hard-earned 1-0 victory in the United Football League Saturday at University of Makati.
Izo Elhabbib scored the lone goal in the game at the 57th minute, but it was the efforts of national players Misagh Bahadoran, Carli de Murga, and brothers Angel and Juan Luis Guirado as well as Japanese midfielder Yu Hoshide that allowed Global to turn the tables on Stallion, which lost for the first time in league play this season.
Shortly after Elhabbib’s goal, Stallion suffered another blow when skipper Reuben Doctora Jr., also a member of the Azkals, suffered what looked like a left knee injury. With its captain subbed out, Stallion tried to get on board, but were continually frustrated by a disciplined Global defense.
Things got testy late in the game, with several confrontations among players. A total of five yellow cards were issued in the highly-physical match, including four for Global players.
But Bahadoran got the worst of the action after his head was split open late in the game after getting elbowed on a play that the referees missed.
The victory gave Global a measure of revenge against the team that defeated it in the opening match of the UFL Cup last year. It was also Global’s fourth win against two losses.
