Pinoy GMs tied in Moscow chess meet

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grand Master (GM) John Paul Gomez and International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia settled for a tie for 77th to 83rd places in Group B of the 11th Aeroflot Open Chess Championships 2012 at the Hotel Cosmos in Moscow, Russia last Tuesday.

Gomez and Garcia both tallied four points apiece in the nine-round Swiss-system tournament, which was dominated by GM Emre Can of Turkmenistan.

Can finished with 7.5 points to top the field of 130 players.

Gomez dismantled Bence Szabo of Hungary in the ninth and final round while Garcia lost to GM Swaminthan Soumya of India.

GM Marteusz Bartel of Poland took the title in Group A by besting fellow 6.5-pointers in the tie break points, including GM Anton Korobov and GM Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine.

Sergey Gilve and Gleb Apryshko of Russia shared top honors in Group C with 7.5 points each. – By Marlon Bernardino
