Pinoy GMs falter in Moscow
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia suffered a costly defeat in the 11th Aeroflot Open Chess Championship in Moscow, Russia on Tuesday.
Garcia lost to Grand Master (GM) Alexey Kinslinsy of the Czech Republic, diminishing his chances of getting a GM norm.
The former Ateneo standout was stuck at four points, good for a share of the 55th to 76th places in the field of 130 players.
Meanwhile, Filipino GM John Paul Gomez also suffered defeat, bowing to GM Areseny Alavkin of Russia.
He remains stuck at three points and shares the 94th to 110th places.
GM Emre Can of Turkmenistan posted his second straight draw, this time against GM Aleksandr Shimanov of Russia.
He remains on top with seven points in eight outings.
In France, Filipino GM Joseph Sanchez is set to defend his title at the 26th Cannes Chess Festival.
Sanchez won the Cannes chess fest in 2009 and 2011 and headlines the list of 60 participants competing in the nine-round Swiss event.
French GM Etienne Bacrot is the No. 1 seed. – By Marlone Bernardino
