IM Garcia, GM Gomez notch 3rd round wins
INTERNATIONAL Masters (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez posted their respective third-round victories in Group B of 11th Aeroflot Open Chess Championships 2012 being held at the Hotel Cosmos in Moscow, Russia.
Garcia outclassed IM Antonio Palacios of Venezuela to improve his score to 1.5 points and shared the 49th to 81st position. He lost in the first round via default over Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Maria Ivana Furtado of India then drew his next round assignment with FM Rakhim Pasiev of Russia.
Gomez, on the other hand, earned his first point by whipping FM Felix Jose Ynojosa of Venezuela. He is in a tie for 82nd place along with 28 players.
Gomez, a former De La Salle University standout, lost to FM Armen Shaginjian of Russia and FM Wei Yi of China early rounds.
GM Emre Can of Turkmenistan, IM Vitaly Sivuk of Ukraine and FM Sergey Grishchenko of Russia led the group of three-pointers.
In the fourth round, Garcia will face FM Sergey Savitsky of Russia while Gomez battles IM Le Quang Long of Vietnam.
