Garcia, Gomez settle for draws in Aeroflot chess

MANILA, Philippines – International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Grand Master (GM) John Paul Gomez of the Philippines opted to play safe in the sixth round of the 11th Aeroflot Open Chess Championships 2012 at the Hotel Cosmos in Moscow, Russia on Sunday.

Garcia, the top player of the Ateneo de Manila University, settled for a truce with IM Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam, while former De La Salle ace Gomez also drew with Fide Master (FM) Rakhim Pasiev of Russia.

Garcia raised his total to 3.5 points, good for a share of the 25th to 54th place in the field of 130 players.

Gomez, on the other hand, tallied 2 points for 102nd to 111th place.

GM Emre Can of Turkmenistan toppled GM Alexei Iljushin of Russia for his sixth straight win in as many rounds to remain on top of the leaderboard.

In the seventh round, Garcia will face GM Tejas Bakre of India while Gomez will meet with FM Shardul Gagare of Russia. – By Marlon Bernardino.
