Roach says Donaire currently one of the best
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Freddie Roach has called 122-pound champion Nonito Donaire Jr. one of the best in boxing today.
Roach, who trains Donaire’s fellow Pinoy boxer Manny Pacquiao, described the Filipino Flash as a “big puncher.”
“If you throw a lazy punch at him, he’s a great counter-puncher, he’s a solid guy. I think he’s one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today,” the famed boxing coach told the Examiner.
He said Donaire’s counter punching abilities and punching power posed problems to Jeffrey Mathebula, who lost the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantam crown to the Filipino.
“I thought he (Mathebula) might give him (Donaire) a little trouble because of his height and so forth, but I think overall Donaire was just too strong for him,” said Roach.
