Remaining Pinoys bow out of World 8-Ball
MANILA, Philippines – Last Filipino standing Roberto "Superman" Gomez failed to sustain his winning run in the quarterfinals of the 2012 World 8-Ball Championship in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates late Thursday.
Gomez actually racked 2 victories by beating Briton Mark Gray (9-6) in the Round-of-32 and Japan’s Yukio Akagariyama (9-5) in the Round-of-16.
But he failed to stay on track after bowing to Chris Melling of Great Britain (4-9) in the Round-of-8.
Another Pinoy, Lee Vann Corteza, toppled Nguyen Phuc Long of Vietnam (9-4) in the Round-of-32 but yielded to Fu Che Wei of Chinese-Taipei, 5-9, in the Round-of-16.
A third Filipino, Carlo Biado, meantime, vanquished Japan’s Toru Kuribayashi (9-1) in the Round-of-32. He, however, faltered against Taiwanese Chang Jun Lin (3-9) in the Round-of-16.
Earlier, defending champion and World No.1 Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo was eliminated from the tournament after suffering an upset loss to Karol Skowerski of Poland (3-9) in the Round-of-32. – By Marlon Bernardino
