La Salle downs UP in Filoil Preseason Cup

MANILA, Philippines — La Salle kept its distance all game en route to a 64-50 trumping of University of the Philippines Friday in the 2012 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Cup at the Arena in San Juan.

The Green Archers drew a team effort from their youthful line up with diminutive guard Almond Vosotros leading the way with 13 points.

“He [Vosotros] played really well. Hopefully, he sustains it. I hope this is his breakout game,” said head coach Gee Abanilla, who took over the coaching reins this season for the Archers.

Jovet Mendoza and Norbert Torres also took turns in offense, chipping in 13 and 11 points, respectively....

Mapua rallies, clobbers UP, 61-56

Mapua vs San BedaMANILA, Philippines – Mapua rallied from 11 points down to beat University of the Philippines, 61-56, Saturday in the 2012 FilOil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the San Juan Arena.

Gabriel Banal tallied 15 points, including big baskets down the stretch that helped the Cardinals nail their first win in three games.

“We’re still in the stage where we need to improve our chemistry and teamwork. I have five new guys and they play major minutes. I need them to jell with the old guys,” said Mapua coach Chito Victolero....

Slaughter leads Ateneo to win vs UP in FilOil Preseason Cup

MANILA, Philippines – Greg Slaughter notched a double-double to lead Ateneo to a 69-60 win over University of the Philippines Saturday in the 2012 FilOil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the Arena in San Juan.

Slaughter finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Blue Eagles upped their mark to 4-1.

“We’re looking at improving each game and I think we’re achieving that,” said Ateneo coach Sandy Arespacochaga. “We’re getting our running game going. It’s the most points we’ve scored and we did not give up that many points.”...

MANILA, Philippines - Reigning NCAA champion San Beda shut down upset-conscious University of the Philippines in the final five minutes and a half to score a 73-63 victory and extend its amazing streak to four in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

After diminutive Mike Gamboa’s basket gave the Maroons a 63-62 lead with 5:27 to go, the Lions regrouped and held the Maroons scoreless the rest of the way while firing an 11-0 run to escape with their fourth straight win and keep the solo lead in Group A.

Nigerian Ola Adeogun, who will play this NCAA season after completing eligibility requirements, had a game-high 15 points and 14 rebounds he spiked with two assists, two steals and a block while Baser Amer had 15 points, four assists and three caroms to help seal it....
