May 20, 2012

MANILA, Philippines – University of the East clamped down on defense in the end game and stifled La Salle for a pulsating 67-65 victory Saturday in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Cup at the Arena in San Juan.

Trailing 61-65 with a minute and half left, the Red Warriors swarmed relentlessly on the Green Archers on every possesion – getting the defensive stops it needed to seize the lead anew en route to the win.

A backcourt trap forced a crucial turnover off the inbound, paved way for a go-ahead basket by Gene Belleza with 13 seconds left then a split from the stripe from Adrian Santos capped pivotal 6-0 run down the stretch.

“We just hung in there. All we needed was just a stop and conversion, then we got an error there in the backcourt,” said head coach Jerry Codiñera....

Codiñera-led UE Red Warriors to see action in Taiwan tournament

January 03, 2012

Jerry Codiñera, a couple of months before his sophomore season as head coach of the UE Red Warriors in the UAAP, will kick off 2012 with a bang when he, along with the very young UE Red Warriors, fly to Chunghwa, Taiwan, to participate in the 4th Ming Dao Cup International University Basketball Tournament at the MingDao University Campus.

Codiñera, who was called "The Defense Minister" in the PBA during his professional career, will spearhead this out-of-the-country trip for the first time since he took over the coaching chores from Lawrence Chongson.

"Basically, this will be my first out-of-the-country tournament and training with the team,” said Codiñera, a former Red Warrior himself. “Puro first-timers din ang mga aalis na kasama ko. Majority of them are from Team B."...
