But who will coach Ateneo?

February 20, 2012

Norman Black Manila, Philippines – With Norman Black set to step down as coach of Ateneo after the 75th Season of the UAAP, there’s a possibility that he will take over Talk ‘N Text while coach Chot Reyes moves over to the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas 2 in preparation for the FIBA-Asia Championship next year.

A team source said yesterday that it’s logical move for the teams concerned while the Blue Eagles start their search for Black’s replacement.

“Yes, there’s that possibility. But it’s still up to the management,” said the source who asked not to be named as there is no announcement yet from the TNT team, which bagged four championships under Reyes, the last being the previous Philippine Cup.

The Tropang Texters are hoping to retain the Commissioner’s Cup title.

“If there will be movement, it’s not going to happen this season. Coach Chot will remain as head coach of TNT, while coach Norman will stay with Ateneo. It will happen probably in the next season after the UAAP,” added the source.

Ateneo won four straight championships from 2008 to 2001 with Black at the helm. He is also team consultant of Talk ’N Text.

Coaching in the PBA will not be new for Black, having won 10 championships 9 with San Miguel Beer and 1 with the now-defunct Sta. Lucia Realty including a `grand slam title with SMB in 1989, a team led by Allan Caidic, Samboy Lim, Hector Calma and Ramon Fernandez.

The last time he coached in the PBA was in 2003 with the Realtors.

In the PBA on the road presented by Phoenix Fuel Saturday night in Lucena City, Alaska claimed its second straight win in three games as LA Tenorio buried a last-second three-pointer as the Aces scored a 76-74 victory over the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

Meanwhile, the PBA Board of Governors will convene today in a special meeting to discuss the Powerade issue following the reported sale of the franchise back to the San Miguel Corp. (SMC), the resignation Tigers’ governor JB Baylon from the Coca-Cola Bottlers Phil. Inc., and the trade proposal of the team with Petron Blaze.

William Schultz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola PH, already met with PBA Commissioner Chito Salud last Monday and said that there has been no sale, but the board wants to clarify several things concerning the issue.

Salud also deferred his decision on the proposed trade with Tigers’ rookie MarcioLassiter being shipped to the Boosters for sophomores Noy Baclao and Rey Guevara.

As for Baylon, he resigned as export’s director for corporate communications of Coke and will no longer be the representative of the franchise to the PBA board, where he was the vice chairman and the incoming chairman next season.

He was replaced by Ronald Asuncion, who is expected to attend today’s meeting.
