Black hoping Slaughter will stay with Ateneo
MANILA, Philippines – There's still a chance that Greg Slaughter, who played a vital role in Ateneo’s recent UAAP 4-peat finish, may play again for the Blue Eagles next season, according to the team's head coach.
Ateneo Blue Eagles coach Norman Black said on ANC’s sports talk show Hardball that he still needs to convince their 7’0” center to use his final year of eligibility in the UAAP.
"Number 1, to convince Greg to stay… that will be the number 1 thing," Black said, when asked about the team’s biggest challenge next season.
Slaughter, a transferee from the University of the Visayas, was one of the leading MVP contenders for Season 74 after averaging 13.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.9 blocks per game.
During Ateneo's title clash against Far Eastern University (FEU), Slaughter averaged 11.5 points and 7 rebounds.
He teamed up with Rookie of the Year awardee Kiefer Ravena, Nico Salva and Emman Monfort to pull off a 2-game sweep against the FEU Tamaraws.
Black quells rumors, eyes 5-peat
Black also addressed rumors he is leaving Ateneo to be the head coach of one of the leading teams in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
"I hear the rumors, actually every year. As of now, I'm still the coach of Ateneo," said Black. "I'd probably stay in the UAAP to win a 5th one."
Black said the "Drive for 5" will depend on the recruitment of new players to replace graduating starters Emman Monfort and Kirk Long, and 6th man Bacon Austria.
