Abanilla is new Green Archers coach: report
MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle University (DLSU) has picked Gee Abanilla as the new head coach of the DLSU Green Archers.
ABS-CBN’s TJ Manotoc said Abanilla will replace former DLSU coach Dindo Pumaren, who resigned after a losing 5-9 record with the Archers in UAAP 74th Basketball Season.
“Finally confirmed from DLSU source: 100% final Gee Abanilla is new Archers Head Coach,” Manotoc said in his Twitter account.
Abanilla played for the Archers when the team was still with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
He also played for Magnolia Ice Cream in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) under Pumaren’s elder brother, Derrick.
He was the 4th round pick of 7-Up Bottlers in the 1993 PBA Draft.
Abanilla is currently an assistant coach of the San Miguel Beermen in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
DLSU is also eyeing its former head coach, Jong Uichico, as team consultant.
“Still to be finalized is Jong Uichico as Consultant,” tweeted Manotoc.
