Perpetual Help ends losing run, scores win over Mapua in Filoil Preaseason Cup
MANILA, Philippines – Perpetual Help ended its five-game tailspin following a 63-59 win over Mapua Saturday in the 2012 FilOil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the Arena in San Juan.
The Altas broke loose late in the game and led by 10, 61-51, after a free throw by Jett Vidal with 2:59 left.
“We [coaching staff] decided not to write anything on the board. I told them just play and earn the respect of your opponent,” said Perpetual coach Lester del Rosario.
Vidal, usually a high-volume shooter, reached 16 points despite taking only one three-pointer and collected three assists, three steals and a block....
Knights turn back Altas; Generals up
MANILA, Philippines - Letran drew strength from the return of big man Raymond Almazan as it repulsed Perpetual Help, 71-67, to fuel its playoff drive in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Cup at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.
The 6-7 Almazan scored six points, pulled down 15 rebounds and came through with three blocks to help the Knights even their record at 2-2.
“I told him he will miss a lot not playing this year, I gave him time to think and I’m glad he finally came to his senses,” said Letran coach Louie Alas, referring to Almazan, who missed the team’s first three games due to personal reasons....
Red Lions seek No. 7 vs lowly Altas today
Defending champion San Beda squares off against Group A cellar-dweller Perpetual Help today heavily favored to stretch its winning streak to seven games in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
The Red Lions, who lead Group A with a 6-0 slate and hope to sweep their elimination assignments before going to a training camp in Los Angeles, goes up against the winless Altas at 1:45 p.m.
In other games, the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals battle the Adamson University Falcons at 3:30 p.m. followed by the skirmish between Jose Rizal University and the Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates at 5:15 p.m....
Tamaraws whip Pirates in fight-hit Filoil match
MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University rolled past Lyceum, 72-50, yesterday but lost two key players to suspension in a fight-marred game that also saw a spectator storm into the court and punch an FEU player in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Pre-Season Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.
With the Tams way ahead at 69-46 with four minutes remaining in the contest, Clarence Foronda and Terrence Romeo were caught ganging up on Lyceum’s Faustine Pascual in a scuffle. The two Tams were slapped disqualifying fouls and were subsequently ejected from the court.
A spectator, later identified as former Letran Knight Andrei Mendoza, who was reportedly undergoing residency for the Pirates, entered the court and punched FEU’s Gryann Mendoza, triggering a melee....
Ateneo nips Perpetual for 2nd win
ATENEO, still far from championship form, scrambled to a 62-60 victory over Perpetual Help for its second straight win yesterday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Preseason Cup in San Juan.
Greg Slaughter nailed two free throws with three seconds remaining for the marginal points as the reigning UAAP champions followed up their 55-51 triumph over Letran on opening day.
Undaunted by the Eagles’ reputation, the Altas fought back from a 10-point deficit in the final period and tied the game with 13 seconds remaining on a triple by Jett Vidal, who was 1-for-10 from beyond the arc before making the shot....
