Lions roar to 7th straight win, enter Filoil quarters

Ola Adeogun of San BedaMANILA, Philippines - San Beda went on an early scoring binge as it thrashed University of Perpetual Help, 74-55, for its seventh straight win and a berth in the quarterfinals of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Nigerian Ola Adeogun played limited minutes but made significant contributions – 10 points and 10 rebounds – while Julius Armon topscored with 20 points for the Red Lions, who set the tone for the rout after the first quarter, 26-7.

Adeogun left early in the third quarter to catch a flight for a training trip with the whole San Beda team to Las Vegas late last night.

“He (Ola) had to leave early to catch a flight to the US. They’re scheduled to fly tonight (last night) and I will be joining them the next day,” said San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc....

Red Lions seek No. 7 vs lowly Altas today

Defending champion San Beda squares off against Group A cellar-dweller Perpetual Help today heavily favored to stretch its winning streak to seven games in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

The Red Lions, who lead Group A with a 6-0 slate and hope to sweep their elimination assignments before going to a training camp in Los Angeles, goes up against the winless Altas at 1:45 p.m.

In other games, the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals battle the Adamson University Falcons at 3:30 p.m. followed by the skirmish between Jose Rizal University and the Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates at 5:15 p.m....

Lions dump Cards, enter quarterfinal

MANILA, Philippines - Ronnie Magsanoc has no plans of celebrating his first month as San Beda coach. But he sure knows how to make it memorable.

Keeping their cool in a highly-charged duel, the Red Lions overpowered the undermanned but tough Mapua Cardinals, 77-61, to clinch the first seat in the quarterfinals in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Jake Pascual posted a double-double job with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Julius Armon tossed in 12 points to help stretch the Lions’ unbeaten run to six in Group A....

San Beda, NU out to extend win streaks

MANILA, Philippines – San Beda and National University take on separate rivals today, seeking to stretch their win streaks in their respective divisions as action in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup resumes today at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Red Lions swept their first five games and are heavily favored to get past the Mapua Cardinals in the 3:30 p.m. match of another explosive triple-bill in the tournament presented by Bostik Phils. Inc. in cooperation with Total Phils. Corp.

Mapua totes a 0-1 card in Group A of the two-division tournament backed by major sponsors Vulcaseal, TMS Ship Agencies, Inc., Kia Motors, Bayo,  BDO, Nature’s Spring, Molten and Oxycan....

Lions buck fighting Maroons

MANILA, Philippines - Reigning NCAA champion San Beda shut down upset-conscious University of the Philippines in the final five minutes and a half to score a 73-63 victory and extend its amazing streak to four in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

After diminutive Mike Gamboa’s basket gave the Maroons a 63-62 lead with 5:27 to go, the Lions regrouped and held the Maroons scoreless the rest of the way while firing an 11-0 run to escape with their fourth straight win and keep the solo lead in Group A.

Nigerian Ola Adeogun, who will play this NCAA season after completing eligibility requirements, had a game-high 15 points and 14 rebounds he spiked with two assists, two steals and a block while Baser Amer had 15 points, four assists and three caroms to help seal it....
