Perpetual Help ends losing run, scores win over Mapua in Filoil Preaseason Cup
MANILA, Philippines – Perpetual Help ended its five-game tailspin following a 63-59 win over Mapua Saturday in the 2012 FilOil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the Arena in San Juan.
The Altas broke loose late in the game and led by 10, 61-51, after a free throw by Jett Vidal with 2:59 left.
“We [coaching staff] decided not to write anything on the board. I told them just play and earn the respect of your opponent,” said Perpetual coach Lester del Rosario.
Vidal, usually a high-volume shooter, reached 16 points despite taking only one three-pointer and collected three assists, three steals and a block....
Eagles battle Cardinals; Stags debut vs Bombers
MANILA, Philippines - After some close shave against less fancied opponents, defending champion Ateneo hopes to get its rhythm going when the Blue Eagles take on Mapua today in the 2012 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
Game time is at 12 noon with the Eagles (5-1) gunning for their sixth win in seven starts in a bid to close in on unbeaten pacesetter San Beda (7-0) in Group A.
Ateneo’s assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga, who’s calling the shots while head tactician Norman Black is busy with Talk n Text’s campaign in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals, admitted the Eagles are still working on the right chemistry....
Cardinals look to stop ‘blue train’
MANILA, Philippines – The Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals look to stop the blue train as it takes on Group A powerhouse Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles on Monday in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the Filoil Flying VArena in San Juan.
The Cardinals, who are currently at third place of Group A with a 1-2 slate, look to prevent Ateneo from claiming its fourth straight victory and momentum going into the knockout stages. Both teams clash at noon.
In other games, the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals look to book their second win against a winless Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates at 1:45 p.m. followed by a rejuvenated San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags taking on the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers at 5:15 p.m....
Mapua rallies, clobbers UP, 61-56
MANILA, Philippines – Mapua rallied from 11 points down to beat University of the Philippines, 61-56, Saturday in the 2012 FilOil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the San Juan Arena.
Gabriel Banal tallied 15 points, including big baskets down the stretch that helped the Cardinals nail their first win in three games.
“We’re still in the stage where we need to improve our chemistry and teamwork. I have five new guys and they play major minutes. I need them to jell with the old guys,” said Mapua coach Chito Victolero....
Filoil officials suspend two more cagers
MANILA, Philippines - Organizers of the 2012 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup continued to crack the whip on erring players as they suspended two more from Mapua for a disqualification foul during their game against reigning NCAA champion San Beda last Wednesday.
League commissioner Ato Badolato yesterday sacked Jumel Chien and Mike Parala for flagrant fouls in their losing stand, 61-77, to the Lions.
“They’ll be suspended for one game,” Badolato told The STAR yesterday....
