Padilla sacked; Stags vs Blazers

MANILA, Philippines - Organizers of the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup continued to crack the whip oin erring players as they suspended UP’s Alvin Padilla for one game for incurring a pair of flagrant fouls.

“Alvin Padilla is suspended for one game for incurring two unsportsmanlike fouls that were meant to hurt,” league commissioner Ato Badolato told The STAR yesterday.

Only recently, the league has also suspended for two games Arellano coach Koy Banal and one game each for the Chief’s Fil-Canadian rookie AJ Serjue and the St. Benilde Blazers’ Ralph Deles and Carlo Lastimosa for the brawl that marred St. Benilde’s 67-47 rout of Arellano.

The league also sacked FEU’s Terrence Romeo and John Clarence Foronda for the same offense and banned fan Andrei Mendoza, a Lyceum aspirant, from the venue for the rest of the season for punching Gryann Mendoza of FEU....

SSC Stags upend Falcons; Archers trounce Maroons

MANILA, Philippines - Calvin Abueva essayed a near triple-double as San Sebastian tripped Adamson, 78-68, to finally barge into the win column after three games in the Filoil Flying V Pre-season Hanes Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena yesterday.

Determined to get his team out of a slump, the reigning NCAA MVP fired 29 points, including nine in the fourth quarter that triggered the Stags’ breakaway, to go with 15 rebounds and eight assists as SSC rebounded from losses to Jose Rizal and National U.

“It was tough for us to recover coming from two straight losses and playing three games in five days. But it was a good opportunity to sharpen our saw,” said SSC coach Topex Robinson....

Blazers torch Chiefs in bench-clearing game

MANILA, Philippines - College of St. Benilde walloped Arellano U, 67-47, in a Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup game marred by a bench-clearing brawl that left only seven Blazers and four Chiefs in the final 7:48 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan yesterday.

“It’s really unfortunate to end the game this way,” said CSB coach Richard del Rosario after his Blazers picked up their first win after two successive losses in Group B. “But we won, we’ll take this and hope to build from this.”

The incident started when CSB’s Joel Tolentino gave Arellano’s Adam Serjue a hard foul which did not sit well on the Fil-Canadian AU player. Serjue charged at Tolentino, leading to the AU bench, rushing to the court, including coach Koy Banal, and some CSB cagers following suit....

Bulldogs nail fifth straight win, maul Blazers

Ray ParksBOBBY Ray Parks and Emmanuel Mbe again starred for National University as the Bulldogs crushed St. Benilde, 71-52, yesterday to stretch their perfect run to five games in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup.

“We just kept it simple—find the open guys for easy scoring opportunities,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano after the Bulldogs stayed on top of Group B and virtually secured a quarterfinal berth.

Mapua needed a big fourth-quarter run to slip past the University of the Philippines, 61-56, in the second game at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan....

Arellano University, Emilio Aguinaldo down foes in FilOil Preseason Cup

MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo came back from a double-digit deficit to down respective foes Saturday in the 2012 FilOil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the Arena in San Juan.

The Chiefs, who are now under head coach Koy Banal, trailed by 14 points before turning back Lyceum, 89-81, while the Generals overcame St. Benilde, 77-72, in overtime.

Adam Serjue caught fire from downtown en route to a 22-point night to go along with three rebounds and four assists to lead Arellano....
