Perpetual Help holds off Letran to hang onto victory

Perpetual Help survived a late Letran challenge to hang on to a 67-64 victory in NCAA Season 90 action Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Leading Most Valuable Player contender Scottie Thompson collected 16 points, 13 rebounds and three assists while providing some big plays to help the Altas notch the victory.

After a tight first half, Perpetual pulled away in the third quarter after Thompson, Juneric Baloria, Harold Arboleda and Justin Alano conspired in a 19-9 rally that gave them a 57-48 advantage in the third quarter.

Kevin Racal and Rey Nambatac ignited a 10-2 run in the fourth period to keep Letran within one, 64-63, with 1:19 remaining....

Lyceum and College of Saint Benilde aims to inch closer to a final four spot as they try to break their deadlock in the standings of NCAA Season 90 Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Pirates meet the Blazers at 4 p.m. live on TV5 after the opening match between Perpetual Help and Letran at 2 p.m. live on AksyonTV.

Lyceum and Benilde, as well as Perpetual, hold an identical 6-4 record for a three-way logjam for third place....

Diminutive Cruz stands tall, cops NCAA Player of the Week honors

MANILA, Philippines – Letran co-skipper Mark Cruz was named ACCEL Quantum-3XVI NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week after coming through with a career effort in the Knights recent 84-77 overtime victory over the Jose Rizal Bombers in the 90th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

One of the smallest players in the league today, Cruz didn't show it as he towered above everyone else and burned Jose Rizal with a career-high 26 points, including 10 in overtime to kept Letran in the Final Four hunt.

"He's one of the two leaders of this team and he knows the guys rely on him when he it comes to crunch time," said Letran coach Caloy Garcia of Cruz....

Small but terrible Mark Cruz carries Letran over JRU in overtime

Pint-sized guard Mark Cruz stood the tallest for Letran down the stretch to lift the Knights to an 84-77 overtime victory over Jose Rizal University in NCAA Season 90 action Friday at The Arena in San Juan.

Playing off the bench instead of his usual starter role, the 5-foot-5 guard poured in 26 points, including back-to-back triples in extra period that bailed out the Knights from the Heavy Bombers in a tightly-contested game.

After a basket by Rey Nambatac, Cruz knocked down two straight triples to push Letran ahead, 78-70, with 3:05 left in overtime....

MANILA, Philippines – Jose Rizal hopes to sustain its impressive run in the first round as it collides with a resurgent Letran even as St. Benilde seeks to keep its place inside the magic four by taking on Emilio Aguinaldo Friday in the 90th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Bombers have found some kind of rhythm after racking in four straight victories and six of their last seven games to jump to solo third place with a 6-3 (win-loss) record, or just a couple of games behind the league-leading San Beda Lions and Arellano U Chiefs, both with 8-2 slates.

Philip Paniamogan should be a marked man when he faces a stiff Letran defense at 2 p.m. after averaging 18 points including three triples a game....
