Letran survives EAC comeback to end losing skid

Letran Knights head coach Caloy Garcia. Sports5/Paul Ryan TanLetran weathered a fightback by Emilio Aguinaldo College to escape with a 63-61 victory in NCAA Season 90 action Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Kevin Racal led all scorers with 19 points and 11 rebounds for Letran, which squandered a huge lead late in the game.

The Knights zoomed to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter courtesy of Mark Cruz’s hot shooting from downtown and contributions from teammates Racal and Jamil Gabawan.

Letran eventually ballooned its lead to 19 points, 35-16, after a Cruz jumper early in the third quarter....

Lyceum tries to extend winning run vs Perpetual Help; Letran, EAC battle to end slumps

Lyceum aims to keep pace with the league leaders as it takes on skidding Perpetual Help in NCAA Season 90 action Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Pirates and the Altas do battle at 2 p.m. live on AksyonTV. Struggling teams Letran and Emilio Aguinaldo College try to end their respective skids in the second game at 4 p.m. live on TV5.

Lyceum (4-2) is currently riding on a three-game winning streak to surprise the league and occupy third place in the team standings behind San Beda College and Arellano University, which have identical 5-1 cards....

What’s happening, Letran?

Letran is teetering on the brink of this season being a lost cause until they find something, or someone, to turn this ship around. A record of 1-4 is not something a finalist should tote even if they lost a big piece down the middle. Everyone should pick up the slack. But what has gone terribly wrong with the Knights?

Before I get to that, I’ll make it clear that this is, in no means, an attack on the staff to the players or to the school. You never know when those “diehards” have their pitchfork moments or whenever this lands in their “Taga-Letran Manila ka kung...” Facebook page. I just can’t stand ugly and dysfunctional basketball.

Yes. What I’m witnessing from Letran is dysfunctional basketball....

St. Benilde barges into win column with victory over Letran

Juan Paolo Taha of College of St. Benilde. MarquezCollege of St. Benilde picked up its first win of the season after defeating last year’s finalist Letran, 85-71, in the first round of NCAA Season 90 on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

Paolo Taha scored 24 points, including 12 in the third period, as they improved to 1-3 for the season.

The Knights played without head coach Caloy Garcia, who had to serve out a one-game suspension after getting ejected in their previous game, but had point guard Mark Cruz on hand after his own suspension was downgraded to a warning....

JRU's Philip Paniamogan drives to the basket. Sports5/Paul Ryan TanPhilip Paniamogan made crucial baskets down the stretch as Jose Rizal University denied a comeback from Letran for a 69-60 victory in NCAA Season 90 action Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

Paniamogan finished with 22 points and five rebounds while converting game-clinching shots as the Heavy Bombers grabbed their second straight victory of the season.

JRU’s supporting cast carried the Heavy Bombers for the first three quarters as they opened a 10-point spread, 36-26, midway through the third period....
