2017 NBA awards finalists announced

Shea/USA TODAY SportsFinalists for the 2017 NBA awards were announced Friday night prior to Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. There are three finalists each for the following awards: Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Kia NBA Sixth Man Award, Kia NBA Most Improved Player and NBA Coach of the Year. Rapper/entertainer Drake will help reveal the winners when he hosts the first-ever NBA Awards show June 26.

Here is a running list of the award finalists:

Most Improved Player of the Year

Milwaukee PG/F Giannis Antetokounmpo: He became just the fifth player in NBA history to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals, joining LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Scottie Pippen and Dave Cowens. Antetokounmpo has increased his points per game, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals and field goal percentage averages in each of his four seasons....

David Fizdale: Taking suggestions on how to guard Kawhi Leonard

Despite taking the loss to the Grizzlies, Kawhi Leonard put on a legendary show, scoring the Spurs' final 16 points in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Grizzlies coach David Fizdale was quite candid about San Antonio Spurs guard Kawhi Leonard's electric performance in Memphis' 110-108 overtime victory in Game 4 on Saturday.

"Honestly, I'm taking suggestions on how to guard Kawhi Leonard," Fizdale said during his postgame news conference. "I've tried everything, and the guy's just ..." Fizdale then paused to release a dramatic sigh.

Leonard contributed 43 points for a career playoff high in a losing effort for the Spurs. He rallied the Spurs by scoring San Antonio's final 16 points of regulation but missed a 21-footer short of the rim with James Ennis III defending him just before the buzzer. Leonard also tied the game at 108 with 17 seconds left in overtime on a 3 from the left corner....

Tied at 2: Gasol lifts Grizzlies past Spurs 110-108 in OT

Marc Gasol made this game-winning jumper as Memphis Grizzlies beat San Antonio Spurs 110-108 in overtime to tie their series at 2.MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Grizzlies guard Mike Conley said he was an option to take the final shot and that the San Antonio Spurs thought so, too, on a night when he scored a franchise postseason record 35 points.

Marc Gasol laughed and insisted he didn't know his teammate was an alternative on the game-winning play. Zach Randolph backed up his All-Star center, too.

"He told me he was going to get it and go to his fadeaway, and that's what he did," Randolph said....

Nelson Chenault/USA TODAY SportsMEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The elevator doors popped open outside the practice court Friday at the FedExForum, and out stepped Memphis Grizzlies coach David Fizdale with power forward Zach Randolph, already anticipating the San Antonio Spurs' next move in this Western Conference first-round, best-of-seven series.

As Fizdale held open the door, Randolph said he expected Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to make adjustments for Game 4.

Grizzlies pull within 2-1 of Spurs with 105-94 win

Mike Conley scored 24 points as Memphis beats the Spurs 105-94 to get the series to 2-1MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Mike Conley scored 24 points and handed out eight assists as the Memphis Grizzlies snapped a 10-game postseason skid against San Antonio by routing the Spurs 105-94 on Thursday night.

The Grizzlies pulled within 2-1 in this first-round Western Conference series, giving first-year coach David Fizdale his first postseason victory. This also marked the Grizzlies' first win over the Spurs in the playoffs since April 2011, when Memphis beat San Antonio in six games.
