UAAP, NCAA squads post wins over Fr. Martin Cup foes
The Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, the National University Bulldogs, and the University of the East Red Warriors all kept their records spotless as the 8th Father Martin Collegiate Open Cup resumed action Saturday after its holiday break, at the Arellano University Gym in Legarda, Manila.
In the first game, Letran dispatched the STI College Olympians, 74-60, with diminutive floor general Mark Cruz topscoring for his team with 17 points. Versatile forward Kevin Racal backed him up with 13 markers, as the third-placers in the last NCAA basketball tournament improved to 4-0.
The Knights were nearly able to claim solo first place in Group B, but UE caught a big break with its 72-71 win, allowing them to keep in step with Letran.
The Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix thought they had an upset on their hands when Dexter Rosales launched a desperation attempt. Though the shot went in, the Jerry Codinera-helmed Warriors stayed undefeated, as referees ruled that his shot was a two-pointer, not a triple.
Prior to Rosales' shot, Dan Alberto nailed a clutch shot of his own, a trey with three seconds left to play that turned out to be the go-ahead shot.
Roi Sumang led UE with 16 points.
In Group A play, National U rolled to a league-best five wins as they easily dispatched Trinity University of Asia, 74-56.
NU had four players in double figures, led by Reden Celda's 16.
Big man Troy Rosario added 15, Paolo Javelona had 11, and College of Saint Benilde transferee Mark De Guzman notched 10.
In the last game of the day, the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals finally broke into the win column, getting their first victory after four tries, when they manhandled the Angeles University Foundation Great Danes, 74-56. - AMD, GMA News
