February 01, 2012

MANILA, Philippines – The Far Eastern University Tamaraws, the Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix and the Lyceum Philippines University Lady Pirates made their presence felt last Sunday, frustrating more fancied opponents at the Arellano University Gym in Legarda.

The Tamaraws ambushed the undermanned San Sebastian Stags, the reigning Philippine Collegiate Champions League winners, 70-59, to enter the quarterfinal round of the 8th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup.

The Phoenix also entered the quarterfinals after blasting the La Salle Lipa Chevrons, 83-44.

In the women’s side, the LPU Lady Pirates downed the La Salle Lipa Lady Chevrons, 80-32, to clinch the second automatic finals slot with their 4-1 win-loss card.

The Tams, who still have a remaining game, improved their win-loss record to 4-2. Along with the Phoenix, they joined the Letran Knights and the University of the East Warriors in the quarterfinals.

Despite playing without former UAAP most valuable player RR Garcia, the Tamaraws still led from start to finish, with Terrence Romeo leading the way with 20 points.

After the Tams took a 15-9 first quarter lead, Romeo fired four triples in the second canto, enabling FEU to post a 41-22 halftime edge.

The Stags finished their off-season stint with a 2-4 card and felt the absence of coach Topex Robindosn and injured guard Ronald Pascual after they struggled with an 18-point deficit in the third quarter, 36-54.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix banked on a 23-6 first quarter blast to eventually dictate the pace and claimed their fourth win in seven games.

Dexter Rosales and Mark Aque fired 14 points apiece for the Phoenix.
