NU, La Salle gun for Sweet 16 in Champs League
MANILA, Philippines - The Metro Manila qualifying games of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) kick off Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Arena with National University and La Salle favored to advance to the Sweet 16 Finals.
Joining the Bulldogs and the Archers in the battle for two Sweet 16 spots are Mapua, Lyceum, NAASCU champion University of Manila, UCLAAI titlist St. Francis of Assissi, NMCAA king Centro Escolar University and ISAA winner Technological Institute of the Philippines.
The Bulldogs and the Archers made the Sweet 16 finals via the backdoor with the Taft-based squad finishing third.
La Salle, led by JV Casio, won the national title in 2008 at the expense of rival Ateneo de Manila
On the other hand, the Bulldogs spearheaded by UAAP Most Valuable Player Ray Parks are expected to end their season on a positive note. They have yet to reach the top eight in two previous Sweet 16 Finals stints.
Already in the Sweet 16 are defending national champion Ateneo, Far Eastern University, Adamson, University of Santo Tomas, NCAA king San Beda College, San Sebastian College, Letran, Jose Rizal University, University of Cebu and Southwestern University.
The other four seats in the Sweet 16 are up for grabs in the regional championships involving provincial champions to be held at UNP Gym. Vigan City (Nov. 7-8), Naga Coliseum in Naga City (Nov. 11-12), Almendras Gym in Davao City (Nov. 15-16) and Ormoc Astrodome in Ormoc City (Nov. 27-28).
