Lina Group launches program to train tall young point guards
The Lina Group of Companies has launched a basketball program that will discover and train tall point guards of the future.
With a need for bigger players rising, the program dubbed as “Higanteng Magilas” will institute a search for tall, young kids across the country that will be put into an academy to train as point guards.
“Nandito na ang mga ingredients at mga facilities para makadevelop. Ang kailangan nalang at ‘yung mga players na disiplinado at maaalagaan,” said Higanteng Magilas chairman Bert Lina in the program’s launch at the DonKen Resto and Bar in Taguig City.
The director of the project is Allan Gregorio, who foresees that the products of the program will represent the Philippines in international tournaments.
“I see the talents as the players representing the Philippine team in the 16-and-under tournaments are all playing in top school teams in the UAAP and the NCAA,” said program director Allan Gregorio.
The program is presented by Air21 and UBE Media with the support of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Philippine Basketball Association, Burger King, NLEX Road Warriors, Voit, MVP Sports Foundation, SMART Sports and Maynilad.
The program will be divided into two age groups—the 8 to 12 year old group and the 12 to 15 year old bracket—and will be trained by various coaches from the professional, amateur and collegiate teams to develop point guard skills.
“Mas ideal talaga na i-train sila at an early age dahil hindi na mahirap ituro sa mga bata,” said Gregorio.
The players in the academy can also serve as a pool for collegiate teams to recruit players for their mother leagues.
“We will also push them to study so that they can be accepted in the collegiate leagues,” Gregorio said.
