Fr. Martin Open Cup: Arellano U upsets champion San Beda
The Arellano University Chiefs and the National U Lady Bulldogs pulled the rug out from under their heavily favored rivals in the 8th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup basketball tournament, Sunday at the Arellano University Gym in Legarda, Manila.
Filipino-American rookie Adam Jacob Serjue led the Chiefs to a stunning 61-59 triumph over the reigning Fr. Martin and NCAA champion San Beda Red Lions in men's action, while the Lady Bulldogs waylaid last year's Fr. Martin women's division title holders College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers, 53-43.
Serjue, who led the Chiefs in scoring with 24 points, connected on a driving layup with 2.5 seconds left to power the Koy Banal-coached Chiefs to their third consecutive triumph in Group A.
Improving to 3-0, the victory kept them behind the 5-0 NU Bulldogs.
San Beda, though, lacked the services of promising recruits Julius Armon and Ola Adeogun in the loss.
The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, got 14 markers from Shelley Anne Gupilan to even their record to 2-2, tying their victims.
Prior to that, the Lyceum of the Philippines University Lady Pirates notched win number three, defeating the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses 67-54, behind France Mae Cabinbin's 20 points.
The victory solidified Lyceum's hold on the number two spot, with a 3-1 card.
In the other men's division game, Far Eastern University also reached the .500 mark, dropping Emilio Aguinaldo College, 63-57, and tying San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the Group B rankings at 2-2. — AMD/JVP, GMA News
