Fr. Martin Cup: Letran stays immaculate, enters quarterfinals
The Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights got a measure of revenge on the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags with a 98-82 drubbing in the 8th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup last Sunday at the Trinity University of Asia Gymnasium.
In the latter part of 2011, the Stags were able to lean on their twice-to-beat advantage to eliminate Letran in the NCAA Final Four, and then dispatched the Knights in Ormoc to become the Metro Manila bracket champs and eventual Philippine Collegiate Champions League titlists.
Letran had clearly not forgotten the two losses, as NCAA Mythical Five member Kevin Alas dropped 31 markers on the Stags, 18 coming in the first half, good for a 59-46 advantage at the break.
The win allowed the Knights to keep in step with the University of the East, with both teams sporting 5-0 records in Group B. It also meant the Knights were assured of a quarterfinal berth.
In the other men's match, the Informatics International College Icons pounded the home team Trinity Stallions, 85-64, to improve to 2-4, knotting the two teams in the standings.
Meanwhile, in the Womens Division, the Adamson University Lady Falcons also kept their loss column spotless, courtesy of a 77-64 thumping delivered to the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses.
The National University Lady Bulldogs also prevailed, courtesy of a 91-38 demolition job of the De La Salle-Lipa Lady Chevrons. — AD/RSJ, GMA News
