Chiefs, Lady Bulldogs book upsets in Fr. Martin Cup
MANILA, Philippines -- The Arellano University Chiefs and the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs surprised their heavily favored opponents at the 8th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup last Sunday.
The Chiefs leaned on Adam Jacob Serjue's 24 points to stun the defending champions San Beda Red Lions, 61-59, while the Lady Bulldogs surprised last season's titlists College of St. Benilde in the women's division of the basketball tournament.
Serjue scored on a driving lay-up with 2.5 seconds left to lift the Chiefs to their third consecutive win in Group A.
Their win kept the Chiefs unbeaten in their group along with the Lady Bulldogs, who have a 5-0 record.
Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs won their third consecutive game to keep in pace with the Adamson Lady Falcons. They also remain in contention for one of the two automatic semi-finals slots.
Shelly Anne Gupilan paced NU with 14 points.
The Far Eastern University Tamaraws defeated the Emilio Aguinaldo College-Manila Generals, 63-57, to hike their Group B record to 2-2, tied with the San Sebastian College Golden Stags.
France Mae Cabinbin fired 20 points for the Lyceum Philippines University Lady Pirates, who downed the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses, 67-54, in the other women's play.
The Lady Pirates have a 3-1 slate and remain in contention for a semi-final berth.
