Ateneo's Black, San Beda's Lim to share collegiate coaching honors
Ateneo tactician Norman Black and San Beda mentor Frankie Lim will once again share the coaching honors for the third time when the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps hosts its annual Collegiate Basketball Awards on January 21.
Black and Lim were the easy choice for the award—given by sports writers from broadsheets, tabloids and online covering the collegiate basketball beat—as both multi-titled coaches steered their teams to the titles in their respective leagues.
It will be Black’s fourth straight UAAP Coach of the Year award while Lim collects his third NCAA Coach of the Year plum.
Aside from Black and Lim, also set to receive citations are Mythical Five members Calvin Abueva (San Sebastian College), Bobby Ray Parks (National University), Greg Slaughter and Kiefer Ravena (Ateneo) and Garvo Lanete (San Beda).
Black, a PBA Grand Slam coach, led Ateneo to its fourth straight UAAP title in dominating fashion as the Blue Eagles dropped only one game along the way and swept Far Eastern University in the title series.
Black capped the year in the international scene when he steered the Sinag Pilipinas team to the 26th Southeast Asian Games gold medal last November in Indonesia.
Lim, meanwhile, had to grind it out to give San Beda its fifth title in six seasons as the Red Lions overcame two tough defeats and some close shaves in the elimination round before sweeping the championship series against the San Sebastian Stags.
Black and Lim also led their teams to a second and third place finishes, respectively, in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL). — JVP, GMA News
