William Jones Cup 2013: Dates, Bracket, Schedule and More

The 35th annual Williams Jones Cup, which tips off on Saturday, July 6, will feature nine international men's basketball teams from across the world competing over the course of nine days in Taiwan to bring glory back to their home nations.

This event also represents a chance for the majority of participants to get some much-needed playing time against top-flight Asian opponents in preparation for the upcoming 2013 FIBA Asia Championship to be held Aug. 1-11.

That competition will take place in the Philippines, although the host nation won’t be appearing in Taiwan this week due to a political conflict between the two nations.

Here is a look at the complete structure, schedule, standings and more for the Williams Jones Cup.

Where: Xinzhuang Gymnasium, New Taipei, Taiwan

When: July 6-15

The Big Story

The Philippines national team captured gold in the tournament last year with a thrilling 75-74 victory over the United States on the final day of play. Unfortunately, the members of Gilas Pilipinas will not have a chance to win their fifth title in 2013.

According to the staff at PBAInquirer.net, the Guang Da Xing No. 28 incident, which resulted in the death of a Taiwanese fisherman in disputed waters, has caused tension between the two countries, leading the Phillippines' squad to be denied permission to defend its title.

Coach Chot Reyes was upset and feels that his team may consequently be at a disadvantage in the upcoming FIBA Asia Championships, as he told the Inquirer, “We have to find a replacement tournament as the Jones Cup is an integral part of our preparation.”

While unfortunate, the remaining nine teams on hand should give fans plenty to be excited about.

Tourney Structure

There will be no medal rounds in the 2013 William Jones Cup, as the final standings are based on the results of the round-robin contests. Tiebreakers are in place to determine the winner in case of identical final records.
