Waves sink Steelmasters in Aspirants Cup, 63-61
Boracay Rum doused cold water on RnW Pacific Pipes' bid to notch a third straight win as the Waves edged the Steelmasters, 63-61, Tuesday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Adamson University Gym.
The Waves claimed their third victory in five games and snapped the Steelmasters' two-game winning streak.
Toto Bandaying tallied 16 points and hit 6-of-15 from the field including a lay-up with 67 seconds left in the game for a three-point cushion, 62-59, a lead that they kept until the end of the game.
Joseph Abaya scored his lone field goal of the match with 2:02 left to play as Boracay Rum regained the lead before Bandaying's lay-up.
"The players are really hungry to win. If we always play the same way as we did, we have a shot at the two outright spots in the semifinals," said Boracay Rum assistant mentor Estong Ballesteros, who called the shots in the absence of head coach Lawrence Chongson.
Jay Eguilos had 10 points while Mac Sabelina had nine points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Waves.
Jovit Dela Cruz and King Importante each had 10 points while Raymond Ilagan had seven points and 12 rebounds for the Steelmasters, who dropped to 3-3. — JVP, GMA News
