January 04, 2012

PC Gilmore caught fire down the stretch in beating DUB Unlimited, 84-75, Tuesday to rack up its third straight victory in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

Macky Acosta and Marc Cagoco buried back-breaking triples in a 14-3 finish to seal the win as the Wizards continued their hot streak after starting the conference with five straight losses.

With the victory, PC Gilmore remained in contention for a quarterfinal berth as it is now a game behind seventh-placer Blackwater (3-3).

PC Gilmore head coach Art Dela Cruz said that he only rested his wards during Christmas and New Year in preparation for the final stretch.

“We practiced every day except during Christmas and New Year and also had a team building session. We need to do that and the boys responded to it,” said Dela Cruz.

PC Gilmore only trailed by one point, 70-69, but Cagoco and Acosta nailed back-to-back triples. Acosta put the nail in the coffin with another three with 1:43 to play in the game for an 82-69 lead.

The Wizards actually hit 9-of-20 from three-point range all game as compared to the Wheelers’ 5-of-21 from behind the arc.

Paolo Taha had an excellent outing leading the team with 19 points. Acosta had 13 points and AJ Mandani had 11 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.

DUB dropped to 1-8 and is tied with Cobra Energy Drink at the bottom of the standings. - RAF/OMG, GMA News
