NLEX continues winning streak over Boracay Rum

January 04, 2012

Three days of Christmas break paid off as the defending PBA D-League champions  continued their rampage onto the top two slots. The Boracay Rum Waves turned out to be the NLEX Road Warriors’ latest victim, losing 77-54, on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.

“Habang yung ibang teams nagpapahinga, kami nagpa-practice. Sobrang haba talaga ng preparation namin for our last games,” shared Road Warrior Garvo Lanete, adding they even had training on New Year’s Day.

Their efforts were not in vain as they kept a double-digit lead since the second quarter, led by the usual heroics of Cliff Hodge, Calvin Abueva and Chris Ellis.

NLEX now has a 6-1 win-loss record, while Boracay Rum drops one place to the number seven spot at 4-5.

The Waves surprised the league favorites with a 6-0 run in the first quarter. Toto Bandaying made most of their baskets, while NLEX struggled from all parts of the court.

However, the Road Warriors sparked their own 11-0 rally as soon as Abueva and Hodge stepped on the floor.

San Beda veteran Garvo Lanete also contributed his share of three-pointers. Lanete, who suffered a shoulder injury in the Southeast Asian Games, is finally back in game shape just in time for their final elimination matches.

Fellow Red Lion Dave Marcelo stepped on the pedal in the second quarter. Following a slam dunk from teammate Ellis, Marcelo fired four straight points, 23-14.

Boracay Rum committed turnovers and continued to falter until halftime where their deficit already ballooned to 16 points, 37-21.

The Waves saw a glimpse of hope as Jaymo Eguilos and Kokoy Hermosisima combined efforts in the third quarter. Eguilos took care of the board, while Hermosisima fired three-point bombs for Boracay Rum.

Their rally was cut short as Marcelo hit yet another jumper. He also made both his charities, giving NLEX a 20-point spread at the end of the third, 54-34.

Boracay Rum relied on free throws and a couple of threes from Hermosisima, which proved not enough as the Road Warriors kept their lead intact until the final quarter.

The fourth canto also saw the D-League debut of Ford Arao. The PBA draftee, who came from an MCL injury, was NLEX’s main rebounder in the final minutes. He replaced JR Taganas in the lineup.
