What to expect from La Salle under new coach Gonzalez

MANILA, Philippines – For the past two years, the De La Salle University Green Archers have established a reputation for being a physical defensive team, thanks to the famed "mayhem" system of coach Aldin Ayo.

A frantic full court press, meant to rattle their foes and generate points off turnovers, led to great success for La Salle, which won the UAAP Season 79 crown and took runner-up honors in Season 80.

Ayo has left the team, however, and taken "mayhem" to España where he will now be the head coach of University of Santo Tomas. In his place, his former deputy, Louie Gonzalez, will be calling the shots for the Green Archers.

In an interview with Quinito Henson of The Philippine Star, Gonzalez said he intends to keep the defensive mindset that has brought La Salle to great success in the past couple of seasons.

"We'll be a defensive team," said the 41-year-old Gonzalez, who has been an assistant coach in various clubs, including GlobalPort and Kia in the PBA, and Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA, before getting his big break in La Salle.

"As long as we defend, we'll be competitive against any team," he added. "Our style will be similar to the mayhem basketball that Aldin introduced, but with some tweaks."
