Ostapenko honored in Latvia on postage stamp

Winning the French Open turned Jelena Ostapenko into a sensation in Latvia - and the WTA star is getting a unique honor back home: her very own postage stamp.

Ostapenko is the first Latvian sportsperson to be honored in what is to be a series, per Latvian Post boss Mārcis Vilcāns.

Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko has been honored in her home country on a postage stamp and envelope.
Other honorees could include two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist and current WTA Latvian No.2 Anastasija Sevastova, and Kristaps Porzingis of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) New York Knicks.

"I know it's a great and unique honor to have my own postage stamp," the tennis player said, according to a release.

Added Vilcāns: "The new stamp block is a contribution of Latvijas Pasts to bringing the name of Latvia into the world, recalling once again the success of our great tennis player on the global scale."

Ostapenko will appear on 50,000 postage stamps, worth €1.42, and also an envelope with 1,500 issues.

In June, Ostapenko became the first player representing Latvia to win a Grand Slam in singles, stunning Simona Halep in the final two days after her 20th birthday.

She ended the season ranked World No.7, the highest-ever ranking for a singles player from Latvia, male or female.
