Gesta to challenge Linares for lightweight belts

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta will get his second shot at a world title when he challenges Venezuela's Jorge Linares for the World Boxing Association (WBA) and The Ring lightweight belts.

Golden Boy Promotions announced that the bout will take place on January 27 at The Forum in Los Angeles. The fight card will also feature Argentine standout Lucas Mathysse against Thailand's Tewa Kiram.

"I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to fight the great champion Jorge Linares," tweeted Gesta.

Gesta will bring to the fight a record of 31 wins, one loss and two draws, with 17 victories coming by way of knockout. Gesta has won five of his last six bouts, including a stoppage victory over Martin Honorio last July.

This will be his second time to fight for a world championship. Gesta was outclassed by Miguel Vazquez when they fought in December 2012 for a lightweight championship.
