Castro continues to lead the way for Gilas Pilipinas

MANILA, Philippines – As good as Jayson Castro is for TNT KaTropa in the PBA, he seems to play at a higher level whenever the puts on the blue and white threads of Gilas Pilipinas.

As a member of the national team, Castro twice established himself as the best point guard in Asia. Even now, at 31 years old, he remains the engine that runs the show for Gilas Pilipinas, and the heart and soul of the squad.

In the first qualifying window for the 2019 FIBA World Cup, Castro again showed his value to the national team. Against Japan on the road and Chinese Taipei at home, Castro did the heavy lifting on offense and hit the big shots down the stretch to ensure that the Philippines would come away with the win.

He averaged 20 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in two games. Aside from numbers, however, Castro also became an increasingly vocal leader for a Gilas team that has become much younger upon the exit of former mainstays such as Jimmy Alapag, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Marc Pingris.

All this, from the player who announced that he was retiring from international competition in 2016.
