Calm, composed Montalbo comes up big for La Salle

MANILA, Philippines – The second-round meeting between archrivals Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University was a reversal of how their first-round encounter played out.

This time around, the Green Archers proved to be the more composed team in crunch time, overhauling a seven-point deficit and taking a 79-76 win. It was the Blue Eagles' first loss of the elimination round.

At the forefront of their charge was reigning MVP Ben Mbala, who sparked La Salle's 10-0 run to end the game. But it was skipper Kib Montalbo who capped the run when he spun to the lane for the floater that gave La Salle the lead for good, 77-76, with 40.3 seconds left to play.

"I didn't see anyone open, naka-deny lahat," Montalbo explained afterward. "I saw the lane and took what the defense gave me."

Montalbo's shot represented a redemption of sorts for the veteran La Salle guard. In their first-round game, it was his turnover that allowed Ateneo to hack out a 76-75 win. He finished with more turnovers (5) than points (3) in that game.
