UP's Desiderio surprised, exhausted after battling La Salle's Mbala

MANILA, Philippines – Paul Desiderio did not deny that he was shocked to find himself matched up against Ben Mbala in University of the Philippines' (UP) game against De La Salle University in the second round of the UAAP Season 80 tournament.

A shooting guard who can also play as a small forward, Desiderio expected to be guarded by a similarly-sized player. To the shock of the 6-foot player, however, he found that he was being defended by La Salle's 6-foot-7 behemoth of a center, Ben Mbala.

"Noong first quarter, nagulat ako," admitted Desiderio. "Ang laki ng tao ko."

"Naiilang ako," he added.

With Mbala on him, Desiderio was never able to get a rhythm. He connected on only two of 13 field goals, bricked three of his four three-pointers, and scored a season-low seven points.

It was a complete turnaround from his performance in the first round, when he torched the Green Archers for a career-high 30 points.
