Pouille, Donaldson Win Shanghai Openers

Main draw action at the Shanghai Rolex Masters got underway on Sunday with 15th seed Lucas Pouille overcoming Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

Pouille, who earlier this season had defeated Medvedev in their only previous meeting in Marseille, produced a dominant display against his tricky Russian opponent. Trading breaks mid-way through the first set, it was the Frenchman who was eventually able to wrestle control of the match and notch his 29th win of the season in a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

Lucas Pouille earned his 29th win of the season with Sunday's victory in Shanghai.
Despite the loss, Medvedev remains in contention for a spot at the inaugural #NextGenATP Finals, where he currently stands eighth in the Emirates ATP Race to Milan.

Earlier in the day, fellow #NextGenATP stars Jared Donaldson and Yibing Wu had mixed results, with Donaldson battling past Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours and 21 minutes. The American struck 14 aces and saved all eight break points faced en route to victory.

Wu, who received a wild card into the main draw as a result of his ATP Challenger Tour title in Shanghai last month, was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by 2014 finalist Gilles Simon.

In an encounter between two veterans, Italy’s Fabio Fognini came from a set down to conquer Fernando Verdasco of Spain, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Fognini will face Pouille for a place in the third round.

The qualifying rounds also wrapped up on Sunday, with Shenzhen finalist Alexandr Dolgopolov and #NextGenATP Stefanos Tsitsipas highlighting the class of qualifiers. Having made his ATP World Tour main draw debut earlier this year in Rotterdam, Tsitsipas currently finds himself at a career-high of No. 115 in the Emirates ATP Rankings and will make his Masters 1000 debut following a 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-4 win over Yen-Hsun Lu.

Dolgopolov defeated Malek Jaziri 7-6(4), 7-5, while Jordan Thompson and #NextGenATP Frances Tiafoe earned main draw berths with wins over Henri Laaksonen and Leonardo Mayer, respectively.
