La Salle's Mbala puts on showcase – on defensive end

MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University star Ben Mbala continues to add more and more weapons to his already loaded repertoire.

His three-point shooting has been discussed and broken down, but on Sunday, it was his display on the other end of the floor that raised eyebrows.

Against University of the Philippines (UP) – the first team to defeat La Salle in UAAP Season 80 – Mbala took on the challenge of defending Paul Desiderio, the high-scoring shooting guard of the Fighting Maroons.

"I had a defensive job today," Mbala said after the game. "I just had to stick to it. Things went the right way."

"Things went the right way" may be a bit of an understatement. With Mbala sticking to Desiderio, the UP guard made only two of his 13 field goals for seven points. Even for Desiderio – a volume shooter who averages 17.1 points per game on 35.4% shooting from the field – this clip was disappointing.
