La Salle gets its revenge, demolishes UP

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) In a display of their might, defending UAAP champion De La Salle University got its revenge against University of the Philippines (UP) – the team that handed them their first loss of the season – on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

With Ben Mbala and Ricci Rivero leading the way, the Green Archers demolished the Fighting Maroons, 85-62, for their seventh win of Season 80. In the process, they avenged their shock loss to UP in the first round of the men's basketball tournament.

That game back in September 23 – a 98-87 victory for UP – saw the Maroons knock down a record-tying 16 three-pointers. They cooled off considerably in their second-round meeting, settling for nine triples to sink to their fifth loss against four wins.

La Salle improved to 7-2 to keep within striking distance of archrivals Ateneo de Manila University (8-0), while UP failed to match Far Eastern University and is now at fifth place in the league standings at 4-5.

It was also a fitting birthday gift to La Salle head coach Aldin Ayo, who turned 40 on Sunday.

Mbala finished with 27 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, while Rivero added 20 points, three boards, two assists, and two steals. Kib Montalbo rebounded from a series of poor outings with 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
