FIBA inspectors set to check PH’s bid for FIBA World Cup 2023

A 3-man team of evaluators from basketball's world governing body is set to arrive in Manila to assess the Philippines’ bid to serve as principal host, in partnership with Japan and Indonesia, of the FIBA World Cup in 2023.

According to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, scheduled to fly on Wednesday night are FIBA Central Board and Commission president Hamane Niang of Mali, FIBA Central Board member and treasurer Ingo Weiss of Germany, and advisor to the FIBA Secretary General Lubomir Kotleba of Slovak Republic.

The World Cup will be held every 4 years, beginning next year in Beijing.

The Philippines, after a four-decade absence, competed in Seville, Spain in 2014 as a result of Gilas Pilipinas’ silver-medal finish in the FIBA Asia Championship the year before at Mall of Asia Arena.

The 2023 World Cup, which features 32 national teams, serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
