Estrella tows Mapua past Perpetual Help

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) The Mapua University Cardinals drew inspiration from a teammate's unfortunate injury to shock the University of Perpetual Help Altas, 76-71, and notch their second consecutive victory in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament.

Andoy Estrella came through in the clutch for the Cardinals, who outlasted the Altas in a battle of already-eliminated teams on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Mapua's Andoy Estrella looks to score against Perpetual Help. Josh Albelda, ABS-CBN Sports.
"Sa huling huddle namin, sabi lang namin, para kay JP ang game na ito," said Estrella, referring to point guard JP Nieles who suffered an apparent injury in his left knee with just 5:16 left to play, and had to be stretchered out of the court.

Estrella, himself dealing with pain from a nagging injury of his own, scored the game-tying floater with 55 seconds left over Perpetual Help's Prince Eze for a 71-all deadlock.

After Eze bricked a shot at the other end, Estrella proceeded to knock down the biggest shot of the day, as he jacked up the go-ahead triple that hit nothing but net over the outstretched arms of Flash Sadiwa. The ballsy shot put the Cardinals ahead, 74-71, with just 20.6 seconds left in the game.
