Coach Perasol issues challenge to UP after disappointing loss to UE

MANILA, Philippines – Usually affable and easy-going, University of the Philippines (UP) coach Bo Perasol was the picture of frustration as the clock wound down on the Fighting Maroons' loss to University of the East on (UE) Sunday.

After shaking hands with UE coach Derrick Pumaren, Perasol proceeded to stand to one side, watching as the Fighting Maroons committed one final turnover to cap a 73-64 defeat to the Red Warriors.

The thin door of the UP dugout at the FilOil Flying V Centre could not contain Perasol's anger as he audibly scolded his players following their defeat – their second straight loss. The Fighting Maroons have dropped five of their last six assignments, and their 4-6 win-loss record is tied with National University (NU) for fifth and sixth places.

"We really missed our chance to tie into that fourth place," a visibly calmer Perasol told reporters after exiting their locker room. "I have to give it to UE. They really played well. I think that they deserved the win."

The Red Warriors made life difficult for UP's celebrated backcourt of Paul Desiderio and Jun Manzo, who combined to score 15 points on 29 shots. Big man Ibrahim Outtara played only 13 minutes due to foul trouble, and fouled out with just under nine minutes left. It was the Gomez de Liaño brothers, Javi and Juan, who kept the Fighting Maroons in the game.
