Ateneo’s ‘Mamu’ welcomes challenge of defending veterans

MANILA, Philippines – National University earned the distinction of being the first team to hold a halftime lead over the Ateneo Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 80, and J-Jay Alejandro was a big reason.

The crafty guard had 16 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in the first half as the Bulldogs seized a 48-45 lead over the Blue Eagles. He made 5 of 11 shots and was dissecting Ateneo's usually stout defense.

Alejandro slowed down considerably in the second half, however, and the credit had to go to Ateneo's rail-thin freshman guard, Gian Mamuyac.

With "Mamu" as his primary defender, Alejandro found himself heaving up tough shots and forcing difficult passes in the second half, which spelled doom for the Bulldogs.

"Very good effort," Ateneo coach Sandy Arespacochaga said in praise of Mamuyac after the game. "Thirdy (Ravena) started out on J-Jay Alejandro and slowed him down, and then Gian came in and equaled the defense of Thirdy."
