Ateneo uses huge 4th quarter to blast NU, stays unbeaten

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Finding itself trailing at the half for the first time all season, Ateneo de Manila University used a huge fourth quarter to pull away from National University (NU) and stay unbeaten in UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament.

First-year player Gian Mamuyac provided a huge boost off the bench, and the Blue Eagles came up with a superb defensive effort in the fourth quarter to come away with an 85-72 victory over NU on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

It was Ateneo's ninth consecutive win of Season 80, giving them at least a playoff for a spot in the Final Four.

"In the first half, we didn't match their energy," said Ateneo coach Sandy Arespacochaga, whose wards trailed 45-48 at the half – the first time all season that they entered the break with a deficit.

"At halftime, Coach Tab (Baldwin) emphasized our defense. We were not happy with our defense, and we were out-rebounded. But we came out and played better defense in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter," he added.
