Arellano coach Codiñera challenges diminutive Dela Cruz to be 'the big guy'

MANILA, Philippines – In the absence of injured star playmaker Kent Salado, Arellano University is pinning its hopes on diminutive point guard Levi dela Cruz.

Salado will miss the rest of Arellano's campaign in NCAA Season 93 after suffering a right knee injury, leaving it up to the 5-foot-7 dela Cruz to do most of the playmaking duties.

The 22-year-old guard got off to a good start last Tuesday, with 10 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in an 85-79 win over San Sebastian College. He took charge of the Chiefs in the fourth quarter, after Salado had to be helped off the court in pain.

"Ginawa ko lang po 'yung dapat kong gawin, kasi pangit po kasi pag nakikita ko 'yung mga teammates ko. Baka panghinaan sila ng loob kapag wala ng Salado," dela Cruz said after that performance. "At least, andoon lang ako, umaalalay sa team."

"Nag-step up lang po talaga ako," he added.
