Antonio stakes Bacolod chess lead vs Short

MANILA, Philippines — After sweeping his first four matches, Joey Antonio braces for a tougher outing as he faces former World Challenger and fellow Grandmaster Nigel Short of England today in the fifth round of the Piaya Network 2017 Negros International Open Chess tournament at the Ikthus Osbron Hall in Bacolod City.

Antonio stakes his hold of the solo lead against Short, who outplayed Kim Steven Yap in their King’s Indian Defense encounter in the fourth round, scoring the 39-move win to join GMs Srinath Narayanan of India and Nguyen Duc Hoa at second with 3.5 points.

Narayanan bested International Master Tran Minh Thang of Vietnam while Hoa, who trounced Danmaersk Mangao in Saturday’s fourth round.

Antonio also outplayed Edsel Montoya at endgame and pulled off a 66-move victory of a Four Knights Game to seize the solo lead with four points.

The 55-year-old former Olympic top board player earlier trounced Singapore’s Jagadeesh Siddharth, Emmanuel Emperado and Merben Roque to take control of the international field.
