Ankle sprain, loss put damper on Sol Mercado's tenacious late-game ‘D’

Barangay Ginebra will take a wait-and-see approach regarding Sol Mercado’s condition after he went down with an ankle sprain following a heroic chase-down block on Meralco’s Jared Dillinger in Game 4.

The 6-foot-1 shooting guard was able to deny Dillinger’s attempt at the basket, giving the Kings a chance to steal the game despite being down 85-83 with 20 seconds to go.

But Mercado had an awkward landing and hurt his left ankle.

“The only problem is we don't know how bad is Sol's injury at this point but it looks like he'd gonna be out for . . . I'm not sure maybe a few days, I'm not sure,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said.

“You'll never know about sprained ankles until the next day. We're not sure. The swelling dictates whether it's Grade 1, 2 or 3. Usually it swells overnight. If it's Grade 1, you'll have a chance to play. If it's a Grade 2, 3 then obviously he won't make it on Sunday,” added the Ginebra coach.
